Supported Employment

Supported employment enables adults to engage in paid, meaningful work with non-disabled peers in typical work environments.  The general approach to supported employment is to provide whatever help and assistance the person with a disability needs to adapt to a real work setting, master the assigned job, and get along with his fellow employees.  For more information on supported employment, see the HRC booklet and video, A Partnership That Works.

Mobility Training

Mobility training helps adults with disabilities learn how to get around in the community using appropriate methods of transportation.  The training is based on a mobility assessment designed to find out which of five modes of transportation, including paratransit, public transit, walking, biking, or driving, the client can learn to use reliably and safely.  Once it is determined which method is appropriate for the client, he is trained in its use.

Independent Living Skills Training

This training service is intended to help an adult with developmental disabilities who plans to move in the near future into his own home or apartment (supported living), to acquire some of the basic functional living skills that will be required for him to be more independent and self-reliant.  These skills include simple meal preparation, light household cleaning, making simple purchases at local stores, and using local community resources.       

Harbor Regional Center can also assist adult clients in applying for public benefits such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI), In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS), and Medi-Cal.
