Licensed living options provide supervised living arrangements for children or adults with developmental disabilities other than in the person’s own home or the home of his family.
Liivng options include foster homes, group homes, and health care homes that offer specialized care for people with physical or medical challenges. A description of each of these options is available in the HRC publication, It’s All About Options - Living Alternatives For Children or Its All About Options - Living Alternatives For Adults. The regional center attempts to ensure that each person who moves into a licensed home is in the least restrictive environment possible and receives the level of services and supports appropriate for his needs and abilities. People who operate the homes are obligated to offer services and supports that maximize client growth, self-sufficiency, and independence, that take place in natural environments, and that ensure the overall physical and emotional well-being of residents. The regional center makes every effort to offer living options that are similar to typical homes and located in typical neighborhoods.
The Harbor Regional Center philosophy is that families should be helped to maintain their minor child with a developmental disability at home, and we make every effort to coordinate the services and supports that allow families to do this. If it becomes necessary for a minor child to move into a licensed home, every effort is made to have the child live geographically as close to the family as possible.
The State of California requires that parents of children under the age of 18 who live outside of the family home (in a licensed home funded by the regional center) shall be assessed for a parental fee. The Department of Developmental Services Parental Fee Program webpage can provide further information. |
